PopBytes recently posted about our Poo Log iPhone app, but something more interesting was the admission of not being able to poo in public. Now, we don't mean squatting down at the bus stop or dropping drawers in a business meeting. The aversion to pooing in public toilets is not unusual. Many people feel more comfortable and relaxed pooing in their own homes where they can take their time. We're all for relaxing poo time, but don't hold your poo for too long as it's best to "go with the flow" and poo when your body has to go.

Now, comedic value notwithstanding, I can honestly say that there’s probably health merit in this. I’m no dietary consultant, but it seems to me that the ability to measure how often you do the number 2 might offer some measure of tracking your overall health. Again, if I had an iPhone, i’d probably give this a shot. Either way, the promotional videos are really quite humorous. I can’t make this crap up.

October is Celiac Awareness Month

Since 1987, October has been Celiac Disease Awareness Month.
According to the Celiac Sprue Association Celiac disease is:
a genetically linked disease with an enviornmental trigger. In people with CD, eating certain types of protein fractions, commonly called gluten, set off an autoimmune response that causes damage to the small intestine. This, in turn, causes the small intestine to lose the ability to absorb the nutrients found in food, leading to malnutrition and a variety of other complications.

Celiacs must avoid all sources of gluten such as wheat, barley, rye, and to a lesser extent, oats. Related proteins are found in triticale, spelt, kamut.

In What's Your Poo Telling You? we briefly discuss how intolerance to gluten can effect your poo. Some people who cannot eat gluten find out about their condition when they see their doctor about digestive and excretory issues, and ultimately are diagnosed. Some affected people have reactions that are similar to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Newsweek published an interesting tidbit from Andrew Romano about the environmental impact of toilet paper.
Some facts from the article:

The average American uses 57 sheets of toilet paper a day
Collectively, we burn through 36.5 billion rolls each year.
Tossing all the TP in America would save 15 million trees, 17.3 terawatts of electricity, and more than 473 billion gallons of water annually

In light of that, the author states that, "the environmental impact of bidets is minimal in comparison."

Virgin TP = Driving a Hummer

In a recent Time magazine article, Allen Hershkowitz, from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) said, "Using toilet paper made from virgin trees is the paper-industry equivalent of driving a Hummer."
The NRDC and Greenpeace advocate switching from standard toilet paper to recycled paper. According to the article:

...the NRDC estimates that if every household in the U.S. replaced just one 500-sheet roll of virgin-fiber TP a year with a roll made from 100% recycled paper, nearly 425,000 trees would be saved annually.

That's a lot of trees. Upon reflection, it does seem a little silly that American's choose to use only the best paper on which to wipe their poo. After all, it is just ending up in the sewer. Besides, I dislike all the lint that all of those fancy brands seem to give off.

Why not try a bidet as many European countries do?
